Who Can Join?
Each university's unit has its own membership criteria. A complete description can be found in the "Contracts"
section of this website.
Briefly, at The New School, all part-time faculty must become and remain
"members in good standing of the Union."
At NYU, anyone who teaches 40 contact hours
in a year, or gives 75 hours of individual instruction per semester must either join the Union, or pay the agency fee equivalent
of dues.
Benefits of Joining
Only members can:
• Vote (in elections, strike votes, and to ratify rules and contracts)
• Attend membership meetings
• Become officers
• Participate in governance of the local
• Receive pay from the UAW Strike Fund when striking
