New York University Tandon Adjuncts
Vote to Join Union

On Dec. 21, 2015, The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Region 29 office counted ballots cast by Adjunct Faculty of the New York University (NYU) Tandon School of Engineering formerly known as Brooklyn Polytechnic University (Poly). These Adjunct faculty voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining Adjuncts Come Together-UAW (ACT-UAW), Local 7902.

ACT-UAW currently represents Adjunct faculty at the NYU Washington Square Campus and Part-Time faculty at The New School in New York. This vote will add at least another 240 adjuncts/part-time faculty into the union’s ranks.

“We’re very excited that a strong majority of Tandon adjuncts voted in favor of unionization,” said Anthony Paratore, an adjunct in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department and Union Organizing Committee member. “We look forward to having the same rights, benefits and protections that our unionized colleagues at the Washington Square campus now have.”

The NLRB, Region 29 office conducted the mail ballot election. “In anticipation that the NLRB will certify the results of the election before the end of the year, we will send notification to the university that we are ready the first week of January to be at the bargaining table to have Tandon adjuncts covered under the existing union contract,” said Emily Barnett, President of ACT-UAW, Local 7902, and Part-Time faculty member at The New School.

NYU acquired Brooklyn Polytechnic in 2008 and the merger between its Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses was completed early last year. However, the University administration refused to immediately extend the rights and benefits under the existing union contract currently covering adjunct faculty who teach at the Washington Square campus, to adjunct faculty at the engineering school.

“NYU said that it would honor the results of the election,” said Julie Kushner, Director of UAW Region 9A, “The best way for the university to do this is to get to the bargaining table without delay so that Tandon adjuncts can benefit immediately as members of the NYU adjunct faculty union.”

The UAW represents 45,000 academic workers throughout the country including, adjunct faculty, graduate student workers, postdoctoral researchers, and technical and support staff. Barnard College adjunct faculty recently voted to be represented by the UAW and the UAW is currently working with graduate student workers at Columbia University and The New School to win recognition for their
