Our union contract with New York University will expire in August 2010, and we are preparing for the election of a part-time
faculty Bargaining Committee to negotiate our new contract. As we prepare
for critical negotiations with NYU, we need our NYU Unit members to complete the faculty survey - if you are an NYU Unit member,
you should have received an email with a link to the survey - if you did not, please contact us now. The survey addresses our contract concerns with the University
as a whole, and we plan to prepare some more specific surveys as well for individual departments. Your feedback is vital in
formulating our positions and priorities. Our goal is to build on the gains we have made so far; our first contract
with NYU resulted in better wages and benefits. It includes provisions for job security -- something that had not existed
prior to this contract. We have successfully defended the job protections in our contract by continuously representing
our membership in grievances and arbitrations. Please assist our efforts by letting us know what priorities and improvements
you would like to help achieve in our new contract. We also ask that you consider offering your time to help in this contract campaign, whether
for a few hours or more. This is a time of significant change, and it is the result of people working together to make
that change happen. We have worked to see a change come in Washington, and locally, in the NYU community, our union
of part-time faculty embodies these concepts through your participation.
