ACT-UAW Petition of Principles We, the
undersigned part-time faculty of the New School, are passionate about providing our students with the best education possible.
This commitment is being undermined by the administration's priorities of maximizing tuition income and promoting
corporate-style reorganization. We deplore the negative impact of this leadership approach and call upon the administration
to agree to the following principles, as reflected in our union contract proposals: - Strengthen the university's
academic culture via full inclusion of part-time faculty in curricular planning and development, using our creative insights,
qualifications, and experience as scholars and artists.
- End the university's widespread practice of removing
talented and experienced faculty just prior to attainment of job security protections; allow greater faculty choice in course
assignments.
- Preserve existing healthcare benefits while improving access to coverage; support progression in wages
commensurate with the work demanded of us.
- Institute policies that promote justice, equality, and greater diversity
in our workplace and curricula, making the university truly reflective of New York City as a whole.
- Substantially
improve the basic supports for education expected of any university, including space to meet with students, adequate facilities
and equipment, and compensated administrative time.
Part-time teachers constitute more than 84% of the New
School's total faculty and we are due respect commensurate with our responsibility to the university community. When the
administration endorses the above principles, we will win the conditions necessary to do our best for our students while reaffirming
the New School's progressive legacy...
